Monty is a 1 year old male Mastiff cross St Bernard. Monty is a boisterous youngster and as such can be a little excited when he first meets new people and if he is in the house he might bark a little in his exuberance but out and about he is quiet whilst still delighted to see anyone who pays him attention! He doesn’t jump up with either adults or children although when playing with humans he can mouth a little still but stops with a firm “No”.
He is still learning his commands but he seems to be a quick on the uptake and already knows sit, paw and down. However, on a regular lead and collar he has a tendency to pull and, when combined with his size, this can be a challenge; he currently walks with a Canny Collar with his foster family and with that he is brilliant and we would strongly recommend continuing with this form of lead walking whilst he learns how to behave politely. The Canny Collar is designed to allow gradual transition onto a regular collar and lead system. He most definitely needs to continue work on his recall and this will need to be carried out in a secure, safe area as he has not been off lead very often yet and his response to being recalled is understandably still very patchy.
In the house, Monty is a huge puppy who likes to be in the same room as the family, being involved in their lives and playing with them; he loves cuddles and fuss once playtime is over. He has been left for up to four hours so far, in his crate and, whilst he barks on first being left this is only for about five minutes and on return he is quiet and settled. His foster family is not aware of any bad habits or behavioural issues, although this has not really been tested around food or toys as he is fed separately and toys are not left around unless specifically being played with. He is fully house trained and he was neutered in May 2015.
This is a giant, lovable boy who has a lot more growing up to do – both physically and emotionally. Could you be the person to help him mature into the fine dog he promises to be? You would need to be physically fit and committed to keeping him fully exercised too – a joint adventure in the great British outdoors perhaps?
